Our Story

Since 2003, Orangebox has been connecting people and businesses through data-driven communications for some of New Zealand’s best-known organisations, including The Salvation Army, Hato Hone St John, New World, ANZ, and Chubb Insurance.

Orangebox began when Stephen Bennett and Thomas Subritzky set out to build a mailhouse that could meet the exacting demands of direct marketing – and be the kind of place they’d have wanted to work for as employees.

In the early 2000s it was all about mail; today it’s just one part of a broader toolkit. Using smart connections, the Orangebox team brings customers, data, messages, products and systems together so campaigns run smoothly and efficiently, and gives clients clearer visibility from idea to delivery.

The business name came from a moment of home décor bravery: Thomas painted a fluorescent orange feature wall, and “Orangebox” stuck. It also suited his and Stephen’s view that the industry would keep evolving so they wanted a name that wouldn’t date with the services of the day whether it’s 2003 or 2033 and beyond.

Starting from scratch wasn’t glamorous. The first warehouse in Petone was so cold they didn’t need a beer fridge, the pantry leaned heavily on two-minute noodles, and they hand-folded about 50,000 letters (and earned the paper cuts to prove it). By year two they had printers, heating, a folding machine – and momentum.

Today Orangebox is one of New Zealand’s larger data-driven communications teams, with offices in Auckland and Wellington. They handle: large-scale digital, mail and fulfilment work, and automate the steps between them so the right next action just happens; dirty data is transformed into clean data; on-brand creative and templates are designed; production uses modern presses, kitting and tracked delivery; and detailed reporting is provided at the end.

In mid-2025, Stephen and Thomas branched out and grew again after finding a solution for oft-asked questions such as, “Can you do creative for us?”, or “Are you able to build a new website for us?” An opportunity for the duo to purchase the very successful agency, Redspot Creative Studio, came up and they jumped at it.

While much has changed in two decades, what hasn’t changed is how Orangebox treats people. They’ve grown steadily yet they’ve kept the same down-to-earth service that started it all – and many clients have been with them since day one.
